What we choose to make visible

Recognition should make the work easier to understand, not harder to question.

Most of the work that makes care safer never reaches a stage. It happens in handovers, in teaching rooms, in planning meetings where someone asks one more question about who is being left out.

We would rather publish fewer honors than publish ones we cannot explain.

The handover that listens

On a maternity unit in Amman, a small change to shift handover made escalation harder to miss.

2026 Evinca Honoree — Patient Safety & Quality

The problem was not knowledge. Staff knew the warning signs. The gap was in the minutes between one shift and the next, when a concern could be mentioned but not owned.

A concern mentioned is not the same as a concern owned.

Teaching where the clinic is

A peer-led series brought hypertension education to rural clinics in their own language.

2026 Evinca Honoree — Healthcare Education

Instead of asking people to travel to a course, the course travelled. Trained peers ran short sessions while patients waited to be seen.

The course travelled, so the patients did not have to.

Ten minutes every morning

A daily safety huddle in Casablanca made it normal to say what worried you.

2026 Evinca Honoree — Patient Safety & Quality

Reported concerns went up. That can look like bad news. The record explains why, in this case, it most likely meant people felt safer speaking.

More reports can mean better listening, not more harm.

The gap between services

An early-career therapist noticed young adults disappearing between two systems of care.

2026 Evinca Honoree — Emerging Healthcare Contributor

Moving from children’s to adult services is a known risk point. The fix was modest: one check-in call and a shared summary before the first adult appointment.

Impact judged relative to role, not seniority.

Two languages at the door

Safer discharge conversations, practised in the languages patients actually speak.

2026 Evinca Honoree — Healthcare Education

Discharge is where instructions are most easily lost. A bilingual teach-back resource gave nurses words to check understanding without rushing.

Check understanding without rushing it.

The handover between

An editor-selected story. Impact Spotlight is an editorial feature, not a judged award.

Across this issue, one theme kept returning: the moments between roles, shifts and services. Reliable care is often built in those spaces, by people whose names rarely appear on the outcome.
